Departmant of physiology was founded in 1937, the subject pathophysiology was created in the 1950s. The late hospital Physiology Professor Hou Zonglian was a famous physiologist and founder of the physiology. In June 2004, the Physiology and Pathophysiology Departments merged together to form one department. The existing staff consists of 34 people, including 8 professors, all are doctoral tutor, 3 associate professors, 12 lecturers, 2 Senior Technician, 9 laboratory division, 1 Assistant Technician. Academic leaders of Physiology are Professor Yan Jianqun (Xi'an Jiaotong University Vice-Chancellor, Director Medical Center), Professor Du Jianqing, Professor Fan Xiao-Li, Professor Liu Jian, Professor Tang Jingshi, Professor Zhao Yan, Professor Han Taizhen. Professor Deng Xiuling is the leader from academic department; Physiology is a national key disciplinary field where as physiology course is a national quality course.

Main focus areas are neurophysiology and cardiovascular pathophysiology in the research field, the main research directions are: ① physiological and cognitive feeling, including pain, taste, and learning and memory; ② physical physiology and pathophysiology, including pathophysiology of muscle afferent, control and movement disorders; ③ cardiovascular pathophysiology, including myocardial alterations and their prevention and treatment of pathophysiology, and pathophysiology of hypertension.

In the last five years, the total fund committed for 35 research programs which include, 12 from National Natural Science Foundation, 6 from provincial and ministerial Fund, 11 field grade fund and 6 other funds. Total research funding received is RMB 5.8 million. Three research awards are received. Won the national award. More than 200 Research papers are published, out of which more than 30 papers indexed by SCI, more than 20 articles by MI and EI, the rest are published in core journals. There are 28 Existing research laboratories, which can carry out a variety of physiology and pathophysiology experiments, including changes in membrane potential and single-channel ionic current experiments, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology experiments. In pain, taste, muscle spindle function, learning and memory, and physiological aspects of heart disease management studies have established a strong foundation, advanced level in the country.

The Department offers two academic credit points for the medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, health, forensic, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical engineering and other professional undergraduate, and foreign students to open the seven-year physiology and pathophysiology courses. Also enroll the master, doctoral students, graduate students of compulsory and elective teaching tasks, courses, including neurophysiology, synaptic physiology, neurobiology and neuropeptides, sensory physiology, cardiovascular physiology, cardiovascular pathophysiology, cellular and molecular pathophysiology, Nobel Prize-winning achievements introduction. 1 Existing provincial education teacher. Since 1980, the Department of the two disciplines have graduated more than 150 postgraduates, 75 PhD. 62 graduate students currently enrolled, including 40 doctoral, 22 master's students.

The department received a total of 5 projects of teaching reform. The department also received two teaching awards, including a National Achievement Award and 2 provincial and ministerial awards. More than 30 papers published, published monographs, 30 textbooks and teaching reference books, of which "15" national planning materials with 10 editions (2 materials as editor, deputy editor of three textbooks.)
